Hawaii's gas utility has a new plant that will transform vegetable oil, coconut oil, and other fats and oils into gas.

Hawaii's gas utility has a new plant that will transform vegetable oil, coconut oil, and other fats and oils into gas.
The Gas Company has traditionally used imported petroleum to make synthetic natural gas.
But the new facility at Oahu's Campbell Industrial Park makes gas out of renewable fuel resources.
The gas will be sent to Oahu customers through the company's existing 1,100-mile pipeline network.
The Gas Company LLC aims to use sustainable resources to produce half of its gas.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie will attend a dedication ceremony for the plant on Thursday.
The state of Hawaii aims to have solar, wind, biofuels and other renewable resources supply 70 percent of the energy consumed in the islands by 2030.
