SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Emergency Management Agency is urging participation in an earthquake-preparedness drill next year to coincide with the 200th anniversary of a major quake.
Officials say nearly 60,000 Illinois residents are registered for the “The Great Central U.S. ShakeOut” on the morning of Feb. 7. That’s the bicentennial of a quake near New Madrid, Mo. It was the last in a series of earthquakes that hit the New Madrid Seismic Zone beginning Dec. 16, 1811.
The zone has produced other, less serious quakes in recent years.
The drill focuses on a “drop, cover and hold on” theme, actions people should take. They should drop to the floor, take cover under heavy furniture and hold onto it. The drill takes only a few minutes.
