HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Sure, you will see your water bill increase if the Board of Water Supply's proposed rate increase is implemented, but you will still be paying peanuts compared to the folks at Wet ‘n Wild Hawaii, Oahu's only water park.
The current bill for an average household using 13,000 gallons of water a month is $39.19. Under the BWS's proposed increase of 9.65% on January 1, 2012 that average bill will jump to $46.18. And by the end of the five-year rate schedule, which includes increases of 9.65% at the beginning of each fiscal year from 2012 through 2016, the average household will be paying $66.72 for water every month.
Wet ‘n Wild currently pays about $130,000 a year for water. The proposed increase would jack-up Wet ‘n Wild's annual water bill to about $209,000 in fiscal year 2016. That is a 70% increase amounting to about $80,000.
"Ouch," said Wet ‘n Wild General Manager Takuya Ohki.
"It's an added cost to our business which we'll have to pass to our customers," he told Hawaii News Now.
The BWS estimates the proposed increases will generate $203-million over the next five years. The money will be used to upgrade Oahu's aging water infrastructure including installation of new underground pipes, new wells, and at least two new reservoirs.
