Central Illinois pumpkin crop is good

Good news for pumpkin pie fans.

The (Peoria) Journal Star (http://bit.ly/r2IIOh ) reports that farmers in central Illinois are growing plenty of the kind of pumpkins that are canned and typically used to make pumpkin pie.
A spokeswoman for Libby's -- the company that dominates the nation's canned pumpkin market -- says the first load of this year's crop was shipped last month. That's weeks earlier than a couple years ago when wet conditions made it tough to get pumpkins out of the fields.

Meanwhile, an official with the University of Illinois Extension says that the ornamental jack-o-lantern pumpkins has just been average, with some farmers reporting good crops and others say their crops this year are terrible.

Illinois is the top pumpkin producer in the United States.
