Nissan Leaf coming to Illinois sooner Consumers will be able to put in their orders on July 25.

The all-electric Nissan Leaf will be coming to Illinois earlier than planned, with the first wave of consumers able to put in their orders on July 25.

The Nissan Leaf hadn't been scheduled to enter the local market until next year. But a Nissan spokesman said the carmaker decided to roll out the all-electric vehicle in Illinois ahead of schedule because of recent announcements about a widespread charging station roll-out in Chicago and the surrounding area. Previously, the company had decided that Chicago wasn't ready for the electric vehicle.

The first 2012 Nissan Leaf vehicles are expected to be delivered in the fall. The manufacturer's suggested retail price is $35,200 for the SV trim level, rising to $37,250 for the SL trim level. Monthly leasing will start at $369.

Illinois consumers with existing reservations can submit their orders on July 25, along with residents in eight states and Washington, D.C. On August 4, Nissan will take new reservations and orders from the general public in both existing markets and the 10 new ones.

The 2012 Nissan Leaf vehicles come with a cold weather package that includes a battery warmer, as well as a heated steering wheel and seats.

Nissan said more than 4,000 of the electric vehicles have already been delivered in the U.S. The company will be opening up ordering in additional states, including Indiana and Ohio, by the end of the year.
