Emanuel says Chicago facing $635M budget deficit

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says the city is facing a $635 million budget deficit next year.

Emanuel announced his preliminary budget estimates on Friday, and says the deficit is predicted to grow even larger in 2013 and 2014.

The early budget numbers come as Emanuel is pushing for concessions from unions. The mayor already has announced plans to lay off more than 600 workers.

He says the city must make tough choices and can't wish away its budget problems. He promises to restructure the city's finances and says he won't ask taxpayers to pay more because they already feel nickeled and dimed on taxes.

Emanuel has known since he took office in May that the budget was in dire straits.
